Croatia - Zagreb - A City tour

Croatia - a beautiful country by the Adriatic sea in SE Europe is bordered by Slovenia, Serbia, Hungary, Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Croatia has been an ancient place with mentions across history right from Paleolithic age to different wars in modern history. Croatia traces history with Roman and Greek and can be witnessed all across the country. Kuna is the currency used in Croatia. English is being understood across Croatia as education is common and so as tourists flow.

Zagreb is the capital and biggest city in Croatia. A great capital city for walking tours. Though not many notable attractions in the capital city, still worth time time for walking tours for museums and view of the town. 




Lower Town - Current city of Zagreb - lower town is the happening place that has a bunch of museums, gardens, parks, restaurants, Ban Jelacic square and the happening life of Zagreb. The place is very clean and well maintained for the crowd that visits on daily basis.

Zagreb Glavni Kolodvor - This is the Zagreb main railway station. The place has ticket counters and shops for all basic needs including food. There are trams that connect the station to all places of Zagreb. The building is quite architectural.


King Tomislav Statue and Square

This statue of King Tomislav is located opposite to Glavani Kolodvor - Zagreb's railway station. The place is always crowded. King Tomislav is the first king of Croatia - He was the one who united all the provinces and ruled Croatia. The King Tomislav statue and the square are attractions for people gathering in the locality and spending the evenings.



Ban Josip Jelacic Monument

The place to be in Zagreb - Ban Josip Jelacic square. Ban Josip Jelacic Monument is the warrior on top of the horse displaying a sword. A landmark place. Ban Josip Jelacic is said to the person who was an army general during difficult times and led the country towards independence. 

Jelacic Square (Trg Bana Josipa Jelacica)

The main place or main square of Zagreb - Jelacic Square (Trg Bana Josipa Jelacica). The walk around the place across the Ulicas (streets) for food, drinks, souvenirs, shopping of brands and much more is always there. Almost, every tram runs through this square and connects all parts of Zagreb. Very happening and place for public events in Zagreb !




Marshal Tito Square (Trg Marsala Tita)
Pleasant place to relax in front of the arts museum. The place is 10 mins walk from Ban Jelacic square. View of Arts museum and Academy of music from the square is nice.

Art Pavilion (Umjetnicki Paviljon)
Nice architectural building just outside Glavni Kolodvar of Zagreb. The building hosts art shows and nice place to visit if you are interested. In evenings, music shows are held to entertain public.

Academy of Music
Academy of Music has nice modern architecture - colourful frontage at the top. The building is just be the Arts museum of Zagreb. The colourful frontage is nice to see in daylight.






Zrinjevac is a series of 3 beautiful parks in a line and happening times in evenings. In summer, nice ambiance and restaurants, eat outs are made available. Very nice place to spend time at leisure.



Botanical Garden

Botanical Garden - Place to stroll and if interested in flora - this place has 10000 species of flora. No entry fee. One can spend 2 hours if interested.




UPPER TOWN (Gornji Grad)

Upper town is a must visit place of Zagreb. The Upper town is an important identity of Zagreb located on top of a hillock and offering scenic views of the city. There are several spots to walk around and see in Upper town. One can walk up in the steps or take the Funicular Railway for 5 Kunas. The Upper town is a perfect place for tourists to walk around and have panoramic views of the city.




Places to see in Upper town - St. Mark's Church (Crkva sv. Marka), Cathedral of the Assumption, Lotrscak Tower, Stone gate.

Funicular Railway is a 1 min ride from lower town to upper town. 5 Kunas per person. This is just a small experience as walking up the steps is possible as well. A to-do in bucket list in Zagreb tour !





St. Mark's Church (Crkva sv. Marka) is located in the upper town. The roof of the St. Mark's Church (Crkva sv. Marka) is very unique by itself and is the identity of the upper town.

St. Mark's Square is a nice locality hosting St. Mark's church - very good architecture. This is on the upper town and looks very good to spend evening times. A must visit to the ancient place.





Church of St. Catherine is a church in upper town - near to St. Mark's Square. The church is quite old - medieval kind.


Lotrscak Tower is a must see location in Zagreb. Lotrscak Tower is located in Upper town and one can climb to the top with a payment of 20 kunas per person. The steep iron ladder takes one to the top to give a great view of Zagreb ! Must to do !

Cathedral of the Assumption called as Kaptol locally is a landmark place in Zagreb - the 2 towers are visible from anywhere around the city. The arches are very artistic and well known for the sculpting work done on them.






Tunel Cric - Got to see this, if you are in Zagreb. Tunnels used during war times for people to be saved. Now, a must to see item in Zagreb; there are atleast 4 or 5 entrances and exit around the upper town area.


Dolac Market

Market place for fruits, snacks and veggies. This is more for local people and tourists for enjoying the colors of the market.





Tkalciceva and Radiceva - The adjacent streets from Ban Jelacic square - Tkalčićeva ulica and Radiceva ulica are the streets filled with restaurants and souvenir shops. Definitely, a must roam around place for everyone - locals and tourists ! Walking by Radiceva laid path is absolutely nice and takes you to Upper town.


Local Transportation in Zagreb

The city commutation is well connected with trams and suburbans with buses. Zagreb has 15 tram lines and and has been operating since 1891. Trams can be commuted with individual tickets, fixed time tickets (24h or 72h) and so on. Cards are available in shops named TISAK.



Arena Centar - Shopping hub in Zagreb
Shopping hub in Zagreb - Arena center is the mall of all brands in Zagreb. This is reachable by bus from Savski Most or Autobusni Zagreb. Discounts are available in many shops if you are lucky. Lot of eateries also available. 



Special Mention

Pivnica Medvedgrad Ilica - good local brews, snacks and food. The evenings can be spent with friends and families here ! Great way to booze off !

Indian restaurants
  1. Namaste India - Excellent Indian food, Both North and South Indian food available. Fine dining.
  2. Royal India - only north Indian; The naan and gravies are quite good.
  3. Bombay Grill - rice, naans and gravies.
