UK - Southampton

Timeline - Jan 2019
Tripmates - Karthik, Siva

Southampton is a major port city in Hampshire county. This city was an important target during World War II. World War II hit Southampton particularly hard because of its strategic importance as a major commercial port and industrial area.

We did a half-day walk tour of Southampton.

SeaCity Museum

The museum has 2 parts Facts about Titanic as one and the other for Southampton. The entry fee is 8.5 pounds for adult for both entries. We visited the Titanic gallery first - it had all numerical facts about the great ship, model and samples of things that were inside. The museum also has a ship simulator to navigate! We spent around 45 minutes here.

The Southampton museum displays the history the Sea City and how torn it was during the WW II. We spent around 20 mins to understand the rich port city !

Bargate

Bargate has been the defence of the town of Southampton. The Bargate had guns and soldiers stationed to defend the town from intruders. There is a watchbell as well. This place is part of the Old Town - 10m walk from Southampton railway station.

St Michael's Church

This is a medieval church in Southampton, located just opposite to Tudor House. This church is very photogenic from outside and quite ok inside. We spent around 20 mins here.

Tudor House and Garden

This is one of the legacy houses in typical English style - still up and maintained for visitors to have a look. This has been a place where high society British people used to stay when Southampton was a great city. Entry fee - 5 pounds !

The Watergate Ruin

Westgate
One of the Historical place of Southampton. The Westgate is on the way to West Quay in the walking tour. One can see this as a part of walking tour of Southampton.

Southampton Town Walls
The Southampton Town walls are one of the Historical samples of Southampton. The walls run around the Old Town from Bargate towards West gate, then to Watergate Ruin to West Quay. One can see this as a part of walking tour of Southampton.
