UK - Salisbury - Stonehenge

Timeline - Feb 2017
Tripmates - Karthik, Gopu, Vijay and Siva

Strong wind, chills and lazy start for the day. However, it could not stop us to go to Stonehenge. We did a quick research and understood about the day tour available from Salisbury train station. We started from Basingstoke and reached Salisbury by local train.

We took the Stonehenge tour from Salisbury train station - a trip every 1 hour. We took the package of Stonehenge, Old Sarum Castle and Salisbury Cathedral costing us GBP 34 .

Stonehenge

The package also included audio-guided tour and the tickets were ready as we entered the visitor''s centre. The 5 min drive from visitor's centre to Stonehenge can be walked in Summer, but not in winters because of absolute cold wind. We spent around 1 - 1.5 hours around Stonehenge. There is a coffee shop and souvenir shop at the visitor's centre. The history is told as assumptions and thought-to-be.

Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument, archaeologists believe it was constructed from 3000 BC to 2000 BC. The stones and the burial mounds are the attractions to see.

Old Sarum Castle

The Old Sarum castle is not fully excavated and if more details of history put there would be interesting. The small shop has some good souvenirs and interesting too. This place is approachable by public transport as well. It would be a great place in summers too. Pets are allowed.

Salisbury Cathedral

The Salisbury Cathedral is very old and hosts great architecture. The whole place is supported by a well informed pamphlet as we enter the premises. The tickets for us were a part of day long tour of Salisbury - Stonehenge tour.

We spent around 1 hour here and also visited the Manga Carta - the original page on the sheep leather. The church was quite amazing to see with many tombs and beautiful paintings. A good visit to club with Stonehenge tour.

Overall, a very satisfactory day with friends. Great fun and memorable moments !
